‘Porno’ named Young Critics Circle’s Best Film of 2013

08 Feb

Porno, Adolfo Alix Jr.’s triptych film of individuals linked through pornography, wins big at the Young Critics Circle’s 24th Annual Citations, bagging five of the six main awards, including Best Film and Best Performance for Carlo Aquino who tied with Jhong Hilario for Badil.

Porno2Porno also took the prizes for Best Screenplay and Best Sound and Aural Orchestration, and tied with Frasco Mortiz’s Pagpag for Best Editing.

Mel Chionglo’s Lauriana is named Best Cinematography and Visual Design.

Porno was one of the entries to the 2013 Cinemalaya Film Festival but, due to its mature content, was only exhibited in the Cultural Center of the Philippines, unlike the rest of the entries that were screened in select commercial theaters.

Alix has now won three Best Film awards from YCC, previously winning in 2009 for Adela and in 2012 for Haruo. He has also previously won for his production design in Kalayaan (2012).

Both Aquino and Hilario have been previously nominated for Best Performance by the academe-based group: Aquino for Minsan May Isang Puso (1999) and Baler (2008), and Hilario for Muro-Ami (1999).

Having previously narrowed down the year’s cinematic output to a long list of 22 films, the group last night further reduced it to a shortlist of 13, and, after more than six hours of intense deliberations, arrived at record-number nominations in most categories: Film (8), Performance (15), Screenplay (8), and Cinematography and Visual Design (11). The critics group does not confer any nomination to a film that does not qualify for the shortlist.

To encourage the growth of emerging filmmakers, YCC decided to introduce a new special category – Best First Features, to be given to the three most outstanding feature films of debuting filmmakers. This year, the recipients are Angustia (Kristian Sendon Cordero), Puti (Mike Alcazaren), and Ang Turkey Man Ay Pabo Rin (Randolph Longjas).

The awards ceremony is set on the third week of March, with the specific date and venue to be announced soon.

nako, ycc! you do it every year!!! angustia?! really? i understand the need to champion the obscure, but if a film’s source of obscurity is the exploitation of bicolandia exotica, women and marginal identities, then shouldn’t you quarantine the film and make sure it doesn’t spread its disease of bad direction, pretentious and instagram-ish visuals, masturbatory notions of cinema and the overall failure of an amateur concept?

Porno, in my opinion, is one of the most pretentious films I’ve seen. It got lost in its attempt to be different. Bad. Simply, bad.

How about explaining your point properly and not thinking suddenly attacking a piece that was deliberated and went under a rigorous process of critique? Stop acting as if we owe this ugly opinion from you.

Come on ! Obvious na obvious ang pagka bias. Nagbigay pa kayo ng award. Maglokohan na lang kayo.

Ano ba ang YCC? Young Critics Cuno???? Matatanda kayo di pa marunong kung ano ang good acting . Nanalo na si ate vi ng tatlong best actress both local at international last year at this year. Tapos di man lng na nominate anf ekstra.

Vilma Santos, really now? She has nothing but her voice screeching, shrill, and all white noise. And by the way, aren’t you also pursuing your fan mentality here as you defends the bad acting of your idol and insist that the garbage ekstra is good? Vilma’s acting is as bad as her political leadership in Batangas.

Panay indie na lang ang ginagawa at pinagtitiyagaan ang maliit na TF, from rag to riches and back to rag.

The Y in YCC stands for young. This is another example of cheap award giving bodies.

YCC rules state that members cannot confer any nomination to a film that is not included in the shortlist. Even if some members felt that Vilma Santos delivered a noteworthy performance, they could not nominate her because “Ekstra” did not make it to the shortlist.

        10 February 2014 at 11:33

    10 February 2014 at 07:41

      10 February 2014 at 16:02

Since when Vilma unlearned that shouting, screaming, endless histrionics and all forms of scratching her throat would never qualify as an example of good acting? Ate, I think it is time that Vilmanians should realize that the fight is over and Nora takes everything home.

Pagpag was one of the shittiest films I’ve seen last year. Kasing level niya ang Diplomat Hotel in terms of awfulness.
